Category: Desserts (23 listings) Bakery (23 listings) Brunch (24 listings) Breakfast (46 listings) Sandwich Shop (56 listings)

D. Z. Akin's Restaurant and Delicatessen, which has been a San Diego institution since they first opened their doors back in 1980, has a menu that boasts 134 sandwiches piled sky-high with fine deli meats. While they're most famous for their grilled Reuben sandwiches, you'll also find amazing burgers, a humongous Philly Cheesesteak and awesome Triple-Deckers. Plus the Corned Beef and Pastrami are full-flavored and juicy just like you'd expect from a New York style deli.

You just can't beat it.... Don't expect drop-dead amazing, but it's always consistently wonderful, the people are so laid back and fun plus you get so much bang for your buck.

I lived in San Diego for five years, and had to move from there back to Ohio in 2008. I have yet to find a restaurant with such a varied menu or with food so good. D.Z. Akins is one of my favorite spots in San Diego, not just for the food, but for the friendly, informal, homey atmosphere.
