The sandy beaches and endless summers of San Diego are a far cry from the lowland bogs in the Irish midlands or the haunting shadows of the ancient ruins of the burial grounds of druids and bards of mythical Ireland at Newgrange. It was in San Diego, however, where Ciaran Thornton and Tom Dowd met, ex-pats with the common dream to bring a touch of Irish Hospitality and cuisine to the most beautiful and welcoming of American cities. The Thornton's logo, proudly displayed on our menus and walls, is a five thousand year old carving from the limestone walls of Newgrange tumulus. Older than the Pyramids in Egypt, this ancient carving is referred to as the spiral of life. There are no written meanings of this symbol as ancient Celts did not use writing, but common interpretations say the tri-spiral represents Eternal Truth, The harmony between, Self, Earth, And the Divine. Our interpretation is that the tri-spiral represents the intertwining of Taste, Sight and Sound and how all three in harmony lead to the perfect dining experience- the taste of fine Irish cuisine, the sight of a well-plated meal, and the sounds and atmosphere of a traditional Irish pub!

I take everyone I know there to eat and have a good time. I recommend a boxty or a steak. The fish and chips is good too. Irish whisky and Guinness are always available. If your not familiar with irish whisky, just ask Tom or Ciaran. They won't steer you wrong. Best Pub and Chop house in SOCAL!

Thornton's Irish Pub & Chop House is by far the best Irish pub in San Diego. The food is exellent and the service is outstanding. The owner, Tom Dowd, makes the pub a welcome and enjoyable place to come to. You are treated like family. With the live music and welcoming atmosphere, what more could you ask for?

The food here is FAB, and Tom (the bartender) is a fantastic entertainer, you will not be disapointed with a visit here, its a MUST! .. "back to yer roots ol irish grub! yum" oh and the boxty, (try it)

Thornton's is a great place. It's even better when Dannicus Live is playing. If you haven't seen them, check them out! Their on MySpace and their are a ton of fun to watch. Thornton's is such a great venue at which to see them.

I go to Thornton's Irish pub every time that the Irish Rock Band Dannicus Live play there I go in and have lunch then come back later for dinner, the food is the best

The atmophere is friendly, the food is fantastic. An Irish Car Bomb, a pint of Guinness, and the amazing Dannicus Live shows make this the absolute BEST PLACE to party the night away in all of Southern California in my opinion. I never miss the opportunity for dinner and a Dannicus show at Thorntons!

I love the food cooked for you at the time you order and served nice and hot with steak, potatoes and vegies cooked just right. With an Irish coffee, it is simply the best. Glad to have the fish sandwich back on the lunch menu. It, with the chips, can't be beat.
